Student Information
St Andrews is somewhat quieter than other universities in the UK, owing to its scenic location away from big city life. Nevertheless, the university atmosphere is rich with social activities and traditional events. Whether you want to play golf on famous courses, enjoy a coffee in a local café or swim in the freezing North Sea in May, St Andrews can offer it all!
The cost of living is fairly high, owing to the high volume of tourists in the area, but students can supplement their income with a part-time job if they feel able to balance work with study. The close proximity of the university buildings to the halls of residence and the city centre mean that transport costs are minimal: students can get around easily on foot, or use one of the university's shuttle buses to reach nearby Dundee.
Although university life should be fun and relatively carefree, every city brings its own dangers and risks. Remembering to keep doors and windows locked and expensive possessions out of sight should reduce the risk of burglary, whilst personal safety measures such as drinking alcohol responsibly and using only licensed taxis to get around should reduce the risk of an assault.
