University of Aberdeen

Located on the north-east coast of Scotland, Aberdeen is the third most populated city in Scotland, and third only to Glasgow and Edinburgh in terms of size. Despite its 'granite city' nickname, Aberdeen's medieval charm, traditional architecture and vibrant social scene manage to attract a young population; with so much on offer in the city, it is easy to see why.

In addition to the city’s two universities, Aberdeen and Robert Gordon, its bustling city centre and numerous bars and clubs, the tranquil surroundings of the Aberdeenshire area provide students and locals with a wide range of social and leisure opportunities. Unlike Scotland's other large cities, Aberdeen is small enough to offer students a close-knit community atmosphere, as well as the excitement and entertainment of a large city.

The University of Aberdeen was founded in 1495, making it one of the oldest universities in the UK; only the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, St. Andrews and Glasgow are older. It is a medium-sized university, currently home to around thirteen thousand students and three thousand members of staff. Although the university encourages applications from the Aberdeen area, it also warmly welcomes international students, with around six percent of students coming from outside the UK.

Although it is not a college-based university, most of the teaching at the University of Aberdeen is conducted at King’s College (on the main campus), and at Foresterhill campus (the medical school). Nowadays, very little teaching is conducted in the picturesque Marischal College on the city centre campus, now used primarily to host graduations and examinations.

The University of Aberdeen was the first English-speaking university to offer degrees in medicine, and still maintains an excellent reputation in medical teaching and research. The university strives to ensure that students in all subject disciplines have the best university experience: recent Student Satisfaction Surveys show that the university is among the most popular in the UK.
