Keeping Safe

Northern Ireland's image is somewhat distorted by its recent 'troubles' and their aftermath. In fact, Northern Ireland today is quite different and most locals will tell you that student safety is no more an issue here than in any other area of the UK. However, students should still be aware of the sectarian differences and avoid confrontation, or displaying openly religious symbols or flags.

Flags, murals and even kerb stones painted in loyalist or republican colours are all testament to the area's recent past, but Northern Ireland remains a fascinating, beautiful region, famed for the friendliness of its people.

There are of course aspects to consider in Northern Ireland, as in any other region of the UK, with regards to student safety. However unlikely it may seem, burglary, robbery and even violence are all possible threats of every day life, and your time at university is no different.

Make sure that you follow basic safety measures at all times to avoid the chance of crime. For example, keep valuables out of sight at all times, lock your door and windows whenever you leave your student property, keep your PIN protected when taking money out at an ATM, use registered taxis, avoid walking home alone after dark and arrange to go home with friends after a night out.
