University of Ulster
The University of Ulster is a multi-campus University and is the largest university in Northern Ireland. In 1984 the New University of Ulster at Coleraine and the Ulster Polytechnic at Jordanstown merged together to form the University of Ulster.
The University has four campuses: one in Belfast; one in Coleraine (around 55 miles from Belfast); one at Magee College in Derry (60 miles from Belfast); and one in Jordanstown (around 8 miles outside Belfast). There is also a fifth virtual campus, Campus One. The administrative headquarters of the university are located on the Coleraine Campus. Although three of the university campuses are outside Belfast, they are popular student locations with around 12,000 University of Ulster students choosing to live and study here.
Each of the four campuses has a Students' Union, which can be a 'home away from home' for many; there are lots of ways to get involved in the Union, from writing for the student magazine Uforia to standing for election as a Students Representative Officer.
The University of Ulster has had a series of recent successes, accompanied by a rising demand for student places and a thriving development programme. A record number of applications in 2004-05 kept the University of Ulster in the top 10 of the UK's most popular universities. The University of Ulster was even short-listed for the Sunday Times University of the Year award in 2001. Over 23,000 local, national and international students study at undergraduate or postgraduate level at the University of Ulster.
