Finding a Room Through Family & Friends

You may find that the most efficient way to find a property is through family and friends. When you begin your property search you should try to inform as many people as possible whom you consider might be able to help. If you are moving to the Netherlands it is worth asking people from your social circle if they have any Dutch contacts who could offer you advice or look for property on your behalf. When you arrive in the Netherlands inform your university or workplace and new friends or colleagues that you are looking for a place to stay. Even if they cannot help you immediately, they are more likely to keep their eyes open for suitable advertisements if you have told them.

If you have no friends or family in the Netherlands and do not know anyone who has Dutch contacts, you may wish to consider staying in a hostel for a little while. Hostels are good places to meet people, make friends and glean information about your new home town. You may find that the hostel owners or the staff have ideas to help you find a place to live, or even know of rooms available. Often hostels will also have notice boards where people can advertise available rooms, job offers and items for sale: search the notices here for potential places to live.
