When you are searching for accommodation in the Netherlands there are lots of different points to consider, and it is inevitable that some might be forgotten. This article reminds you of the basic points to remember, including starting your search early, part-time jobs, (un)furnished rooms and smoke detectors.


Early Search

Remember to start your accommodation search as soon as possible: the longer you have, the more time is available to consider the area where you would like to stay, the type of accommodation you hope to find and how much you will have to pay. More time increases your flexibility and enables you to research your possibilities. You can ask for advice from current residents, colleagues, or fellow students and use the information you gather to search for the specific property you need. The earlier you begin your search, the better the chance that you will find a suitable property; if you start looking for a place to live at the last minute, you will have to accept the best offer you can find which may be unsatisfactory.


Part-Time Job

Renting a property in the Netherlands is expensive; if you are a student and wish to reduce the costs it is recommended that you find a part-time job. In larger Dutch cities it is not difficult to find a part-time job, and there are several employment agencies who specialise in finding appropriate student jobs. Many students work in bars or restaurants, but many others find jobs on campus. Ask at the students' union if you need help or advice.


(Un)furnished

In the Netherlands it is rare to find rented accommodation which is furnished, even if the property is designed for students who will be staying for shorter periods of time. An unfurnished room has no furniture at all, only the floor, walls and ceiling: there is no bed, nor wardrobe. There may be the possibility of internet and television connection: ask your landlord for details before you sign the contract. If you are coming to the Netherlands for a short period of time, perhaps as a foreign student, you may need a furnished room. Some landlords will furnish the room if you ask, and increase the rent to compensate the added expense. If this is not possible there are many furniture stores and second-hand furniture shops from which you can furnish your room without too much cost.


Smoke Detector

Before you move into a property you should check whether or not there are any smoke detectors. If there are none you ought to purchase one as soon as possible. This small device emits a high-pitched alarm if it detects smoke, ensuring that you are quickly aware of any fires and can leave the property promptly and safely. You may be able to request a smoke detector in your property from your landlord. It is advisable to place smoke detectors in hallways and not in kitchens or bathrooms, since steam could set off the alarm. One smoke detector per floor is sufficient.
