Rental Prices: Regional Variation

In France the average rent per square metre is currently around €11 a month, with an average living space of around €51m². Smaller apartments cost more per square metre than larger ones; in a studio apartment a square metre will cost around €14, whereas rent is only €9 or €10 per square metre in a larger apartment with four or five rooms. Most apartments for rent are small: accommodation with five or more rooms makes up only about three percent of the housing market in France. This can be a problem in the centre of big cities, where there are mainly small apartments available. To find an affordable big flat, you have to look to the suburbs.
