Renting Property in France

Moving to France can be a daunting and difficult experience, as regulations, formalities and customs may differ from those known in the UK. This guide aims to give you all the information you need to make your move, and your search for accommodation, as smooth as possible.

In terms of rental prices in France, the country is clearly divided: on one side there is the Île-de-France, with Paris at its expensive centre; on the other side, there is the rest of the country which is much cheaper than the Île-de-France region. Consequently, the average rental price per square metre is around €20 in Paris, in contrast to France as a whole, where the average price is only €11/m². This guide presents the average rental prices in twenty regions and forty cities, to help you calculate your accommodation expenses.

Since French tenancy law favours the tenant, landlords are particularly critical when considering new potential tenants. You may face more problems while looking for housing than during the actual tenancy. However, although the tenant has more rights than the landlord, they have certain duties to fulfil.
