Finding Accommodation in Germany

It is important to begin your search for accommodation as early as possible, whether you are coming to Germany as a foreign student, foreign intern or employee. It can take a particularly long time to find an affordable place to live in a city with a large student population.

If you are searching for an apartment or room to rent, it is a good idea to start your search by looking at advertisements in the housing section of the local newspaper. Large cities will have at least one newspaper which features property advertisements once or twice a week. Many newspapers will also publish these property advertisements on their website.

Additionally, every large city will have numerous estate agencies and self-employed estate agents, who offer potential renters a property-finding service. In exchange for their assistance you are required to pay them a fee called a 'courtage': make sure that you ask the agency for an estimate of their fees before using the service. Estate agencies advertise in newspapers and online; they are also listed in the Yellow Pages ('Gelbe Seiten') telephone directory.
