Renting Property in Germany
Whether you have just arrived in Germany or are planning to live there in the future, it is always useful to have some assistance in your search for accommodation. This guide aims to relieve you of some of the stress associated with finding a place to stay.
Germany is divided into 'Bundesländer', essentially sixteen counties each with their own state government. The sixteen Bundesländer are:
- Baden-Württemberg
- Bayern
- Berlin
- Brandenburg
- Bremen
- Hamburg
- Hessen
- Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
- Niedersachen
- Nordrhein-Westphalen
- Rheinland-Pfalz
- Saarland
- Sachsen
- Sachsen-Anhalt
- Schleswig-Holstein
- Thüringen
The capital of Germany is Berlin. Other large cities include: Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, Cologne, Leipzig and Dresden. There are over eighty million people currently living in Germany, a country famous for its beer, its hearty cuisine and its thriving industry. Although the majority of Germans are Christian there is freedom of religion, an important cultural aspect in a country where many citizens have an immigration background. Germans are keen on protecting animals and the environment: few countries have so many organisations which work to protect animals and nature, nor so many strict rules regarding environmental issues. In Germany it is common to separate rubbish for recycling: something to get used to as a resident of the country!
