Further Advice

There are certain useful tips to consider if you wish to open and manage a current account in France. Many of these measures are basic common sense, but when moving to another country or coming to terms with a new culture, it can be useful to keep certain ideas in mind:

  • If you are leaving your country for a short period of time, or planning to move abroad, it is advisable to contact your bank and see if it has branches in France or agreements with a French bank before you leave. This information may help you open a suitable account or find a suitable bank in France.

  • If you move to live in France, open an account as soon as possible. It takes at least ten days for the account to be set up and activated, and for your electronic cards and chequebook to be sent out.

  • If you stay in France more than three months, it will prove extremely useful to open a bank account. Opening a current account for less than three months is often difficult: most banks are reluctant to open an account for a time period under three months. However, you can open a savings account for only a short time.

  • If you want to open a bank account and you are a student, check with your university and your local bank whether they offer special deals for students. As a student you should also qualify for student loans at preferential rates of interest.

  • Some banks offer overdraft facilities, if you are eligible, but bear in mind that the charges can be very expensive.

  • Transparent financial management and good communication are key factors in maintaining a good relationship with your financial advisor. If a problem occurs, your bank will be more inclined to help you.
