Bank Accounts in Germany

Essentially, having a bank account in Germany is inevitable: no matter whether you earn a salary, receive state benefits, rent a property or simply need to pay utility bills, it is almost impossible to avoid managing your money via an account of some kind.

Most people are eligible to open a bank account in Germany, but certain restrictions apply: some accounts will require a minimum deposit each month.

The central credit committee in Germany considers that everyone should be allowed to open a current account, even if you have only a very small income or a poor credit rating. However, if you previously had an account and wish to open a new one, different rules may apply.

In order to open a bank account, you will need to fill in application forms and give proof of your identity. If you want to open a bank account online, you will usually be sent the forms in the post and asked to fill out a 'Postident-Coupon'. This coupon is verified and completed by an employee of the Post Office, who confirms your identity.
