I recently got laid off and they have offered me severance checks which will last for 30weeks. My question is, while they are giving me this money can I still unemployment insurance? Severance pay to my understanding is with reference to how long you worked there isn’t it, it isn’t anything to do with helping you whilst looking for another job, or is it?

Well the same thing happened to a friend of mine a while back. She worked for AT&T for years and then they laid her off, well her AND the whole department. Cant remember how many severance checks she got but she went to go and make a claim for UI and they said that she could not claim until the check period had finished, ie when she actually was receiving NO money. This is California, not sure if state by state the rules change but if not then I doubt you’ll be able to claim anything.
