When the SLC works out how much to award each student, what do they base the calculations on, and who will get the maximum student loan? |

The student loan is in two parts, covering tuition fees and maintenance, which basically means that it covers your course fees and living costs. The SLC works out the amount you need, as you said, which means that they take things like your location and your specific course into account. If you are studying an expensive course, or studying in an expensive area like London, you will get more money to cover the costs involved. Your parents' income is also considered for the maintenance loan, since your parents will probably pay for some items, like books or clothes or even rent, if they can. For these reasons, the biggest loan for tuition fees will go to the person studying the most expensive course, while the biggest maintenance loan will go to someone whose parents can't support them, and who plans to live away from home in an expensive place! |

If you put your details here in the student finance calculator then you will be able to find out whether you are entitled to the maximum student loan. http://www.studentfinance.direct.gov.uk/portal/page?_pageid=153,4680089&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL |
