Why was the old grants system ever demolished? It seems to me that the Gov. student loan was a much better deal and enabled everyone to study, only without debt!

The problem is that the old system no longer exists. I'm pretty confident that students today would prefer grants, but of course the option isn't there. The problem is that the government says that everyone has to go to university to succeed, which just isn't true or fair, and this means that millions more students would need 'free money' which they can't afford to give out. Now tuition fees and other costs have to be covered by the individual students. They claim they give them 'free student loans' but this is a dubious claim too...

Definitely, I remember when I took out my loan back in 2004 I thought it was interest free, I know I probably paid more attention, but in my head I knew I was going to uni and this was the only way to go, and now I notice that every year I get a statement and the amount I owed was increasing directly after the first year, it is ludicrous and the worse thing about it all is that I was lucky enough to get through to uni before the prices went up, I feel awfully sorry for those afterwards.
