My student loans are hanging like a weight around my neck... Can you defer student loans easily? What are the EXACT criteria the loan company wants to check?

I understand it like this: you can't defer if you owe money, and you have to have a good reason. They won't let you defer if you haven't been making your payments on time – ask to defer before you get into problems! Also, you'll have to have a good reason for the deferment, such as: you are dead (serious!), you don't earn enough, you are job seeking, you are disabled, you are studying or you're working in a particular profession that enables you to defer, like medicine. There are other possible reasons too. But basically, the loan company will check all your claims and details to see whether they should defer your payments or get you to pay: it's not usually an easy way out!

Why are people working in medicine able to defer and no one else is? How long are they allowed to defer for? Shouldn’t it be the other way around seeing as they end up earning more than most professions?
