Can anyone offer any assistance getting some personal advice on student finance? Darlington council refer you to the student loans company, but I'm not even sure whether a loan is my best option!

How do you intend to finance your studies? You don't have to take out a student loan, certainly there's no obligation, but you'll need to cover tuition fees, accommodation, course costs (like books) and the cost of living! If you're lucky enough to be able to finance yourself without the loan, have a look for advice on finding scholarships and getting part-time jobs so that you've covered every base and can be sure you've got enough income. If you don't have to work to pay your way, you're in the best possible position to help yourself for the future. You should still work, but you can take the opportunity to search for jobs that actually look good on your CV because the pay isn't important! Something relevant to your studies, like a veterinary assistant or a media intern, will help you get a job when you graduate. You may even get to know people who are willing to employ you later on!
