I am coming in to my first year of uni soon and I was hoping to set up a student account with an overdraft to make sure I have enough until my loan comes through as my parents aren’t able to contribute unfortunately. I had my cash card from HSBC so thought it would be easiest to just stay with them for my student account as they can just upgrade it directly. But I was shocked to find that I have been refused the HSBC student account overdraft…… why? I have no idea why I would be refused, I thought everyone could get an overdraft just the amount depended on the criteria but apparently not as they said I don’t meet their criteria for an overdraft. But what criteria could they possibly have….. all first year students are usually in the same situation, BROKE!!!! I don’t get it.

Why don’t you just change banks? I am sure another one will offer you one if you explain the situation. Banks always want potential mortgage/loan customers for the future and if they see that a student is willing to change banks to get an overdraft they will see money as they might be able to charge you in the future for it, that’s all they think about, which is good for you in this instance.

I defo would follow Tilly's advice, many of the other banks will be more than happy to give you an overdraft. AND you might even find that when you tell HSBS that you are leaving as they didnt give you an overdraft they might overlook it....
