I thought you had to apply to your local council to get a student loan? Now there seems to be a change of plans with student finance... Barnet council says I should contact student finance direct. Is this UK-wide or just in London?

You'll need to apply for your loans with Student Finance which is part of the Directgov government site. If you go to their student finance pages then they've got loads of information on every aspect of student finance. You can read about the whole process, from the application to repayments! I applied for a loan in 2002, so the system was different then. As far as I know it changed around 2004, and I don't think the councils are involved anymore. Good luck anyway!
