Can foreign students get a student account & free overdraft facility? Or are student account overdrafts only available for UK citizens?

It's hard to qualify for a student account, even a basic one, unless you're a UK citizen. My friend came over from Germany to study here and was asked for proof of his UK student loans... which of course he doesn't have... and couldn't open a student account. You can open a basic current account though, which lets you take care of the financial side of things. A lot of these offer low fees and internet banking etc. I think you may have difficulties arranging a free overdraft, but a lot of banks offer you an overdraft facility: just be sure to check the charges involved!
