I am going on my Erasmus year next year and want to know whether I will be able to open a student’s bank account in France even though I am not studying in France. My French is very limited but I will be going to work in an English speaking company. As I will be getting paid by them (not a lot unfortuantley hihihihihi) I need to whether they will let me open a student’s bank account of whether I will have to open a normal current account? I know that many current accounts you have to pay for so I don’t want to have to pay out of my very low wages.....

Which town will you be going to in France? If it is a very touristic/business city then the banks will more than likely speak English so don’t worry about the language aspect. I used to work in Toulouse (South France) and they had a Banque Populaire bank in the airport where the entire staff spoke French, English and Spanish, so perhaps try the airport when you arrive. You will find in France that you have to pay even for the student accounts in France, I think BNP Paribas is the only bank where it’s free but I am not sure, you’ll have to check.

I went abroad last year to Lille as part of my Erasmus; it was a little different though as I studied for Erasmus, so I had a French student card. But I would try BNP Paribas, perhaps just take your English student card with you and explain that you are there for your Erasmus, perhaps they’ll ask your uni to confirm but that shouldn’t be a problem if you have any Erasmus documents I’m sure they’ll let you open a student account. Good luck!!!!
