My sister and I are applying for mortgages on line – actually remortgages as we need to free up some cash for a joint venture. Is it safe to give out personal details on line? What are the security risks involved?

There is always a chance of fraud, but you can reduce your risk factor. It's probably not a good idea to send enquiries with personal details to lots of different sites, unless you set up a separate email address and keep the enquiries general / anonymous. Make sure that you only ever give personal banking details out on secured sites: sometimes the site will take you to a secured area before asking you for your information. If you're worried about the security of a transaction, you could mix online and offline services! Do your research online, get the deal sorted out and go in person to the bank to sign the documents
