I was just playing around with some figures as I want to figure out which BS is going to give me the best mortgage offer. I have filled in quite a few now and have never come across this question: Are you an existing customer like I found on the Britannia mortgage calculator. What difference does it make if I am a customer or not? Do customers get preferential rates? If so couldn’t I simply open an account a couple of weeks before?

I doubt they get preferential rates, but if you are curious enough you could enter your details twice in the calculator and see whether it changes the end product if you put you are an existing customer.
Also very interesting:

I have seen this question on many calculators, I think it is perfectly normal.

But why should it be normal, it is true, what difference does it make?

I think there is a difference. But it isn’t as simple as if you open an account a week before you get a huge rate difference. It is special accounts, well that’s what I think. I know that with HSBC if you have the HSBC Plus account and you apply for a mortgage then you get a preferential mortgage. But I don’t know how much of a difference this is, and to have this account you pay about £110 a year so maybe they let you have a saving on your mortgage of this amount. I really don’t know. But it is possible, that I do know!!!!
