Is it really a good idea to compare mortgages online when they're so important?

I can understand people comparing credit card deals online, but is it really sensible for someone to compare mortgages online? I only say this because the repercussions of choosing a bad deal on a mortgage stay with you much longer than finding you've got a card with a high interest rate...

I don't see what the problem is with researching online? I assume from your worries about it 'staying with you' you're more concerned with people actually sealing the deal online than just comparing mortgage deals? In response to your first question, I think any kind of research and comparison is sensible – especially when the product is as important and financially daunting as a mortgage... In response to your second, it's still possible to choose a terrible mortgage sitting in a consultation room at the bank: being on the internet doesn't necessarily make your judgement any worse!

Also very interesting:

  • Is poor credit a problem looking for mortgages online / quote for a mortgage?
  • Why is the mortgage calculator Halifax has online so long?

I know! Completely true!!! People nowadays always rely on the internet, especially comparison websites and never both to actually speak to someone who might actually know. How do you think the companies are on these sites, they pay to be used on the comparison sites, so it doesn’t really give you a fair view of the market when the only ones lucky enough to be “chosen” are the ones who paid to be there!!!
