I have been in my branch a couple of times to find out about Britannia mortgage rates and I was happy with what they offered me. On a fixed rate mortgage I think I am getting a pretty good deal over the next few years. However I was wondering, I didn’t ask the guy and need to know whether I can get protection insurance on top of this. If so how much would it be? Do you have to take out the insurance at the same time as the mortgage or can you buy it later on?

I doubt that you would be able to buy it later on, if so what is to stop people from taking out the policy just before they know they will need it?

The insurance itself is actually provided by Axa so I would have thought you could take it out with them at any time. But then again if you look on their website there isn’t a separate page for this making it seem more likely that you have to buy it at the same time as you sign the mortgage.

It costs something like 5 quid for every hundred of your mortgage, a rip off if you ask me.
