Hi guys, what's a life insurance swab test and why would I need to have one? Does my insurer suspect something weird? Or is this kind of test a routine measure?

Your life insurance provider needs to do a thorough check up on you, your medical history, and all aspects of your current health, before they can be certain that they are willing to insure you. This means asking you a series of (sometimes intimate!) questions and asking you to undertake certain medical tests. The swab test is a test where some cells are taken from your mouth, using an oral swab (typically something that looks like an oversized, sterile cotton bud!). These cells help them to diagnose things like oral health and the presence of certain drugs in your body, such as nicotine. Some insurers require all potential customers to have this kind of test, others will ask certain applicants to have this, perhaps if they suspect that they are heavy smokers. I wouldn't worry about it though: it doesn't hurt and I'm sure it won't be a problem!
