I would like to ensure that my investments account is safe, or at least know that I won't lose all my money just before retirement... How should I go about this?

This is a service that your investor should offer automatically. You shouldn't need to check that your investment is being managed correctly – they should reduce the inherent level of risk to your investment as you get older. Ask your investment account provider what measures they take to protect you. If they really don't change the risk involved, you may need to ensure that they start! In this case, high risk stock market investments should be transferred gradually into guaranteed equity bonds, gilts, etc. as your retirement date approaches.
