I'd like to open an online investment account that enables me to buy and sell stocks and shares. Who offers this kind of service? And how does it work?

Lots of banks allow you to buy and sell stocks and shares if you have an investment account: ING Direct, Halifax, Barclays... Each of these banks offers their own version of the online investment account. Some offer several different ones, depending on how involved you want to be. For example, with ING you can open an account that lets you invest automatically, or open an account that lets you buy and sell shares in real time. You'll need to read what's on offer to understand the details of how these accounts work – if you have no idea about trading, I'd recommend a beginner's account where someone else trades for you. It's also a good idea to get advice from the banks' advisers – they know the ins and outs of their products, and should be able to explain whether they make a sensible addition to your portfolio.
