I am planning on buying a house that is in need of major renovation…. But that’s why I want it lol! I love taking projects like this on, but all the other times I have actually been able to live in a certain area of the house, but with this one not. So my question now is, how do I find buildings insurance for unoccupied properties? Is there a specific type of insurance that covers this? If I get buy to let insurance would this be ok? It has a longer period under the occupancy clause in comparison to the regular home insurance, right?

Not sure if you would be able to actually get buy to let when the main purpose of the property wont be for you to let it out. It is a difficult situation and you are right to think this way, and in all fairness perhaps you are right to go this way as I think the average unoccupied buildings insurance costs three times the amount or insuring an occupied home. If I were you, I would contact your insurer who insurers your current home and explain the situation to them, they might be able to help you out if you have been a customer for a while.
