I seem to have a panic disorder and am looking in to seeking psychiatric treatment but I am not sure if my health insurance (Axa) will cover it? Do I have to be referred to a psychiatrist by one of their doctors or can I just see someone and then claim it back afterwards?

I would say you definitely have to call them first before you pay anything. There might be a special order that things need to be done and if you do them wrong you could be left to foot the bill. I know Axa does cover specialist treatment such as this but only for a certain amount per year, so don’t expect to get much out of it. Can the NHS not help?
