I like your cynical approach I read once that life insurance dates back to roman times, presumably because civilisation recognised fairly quickly that it's important to have security for wives and children and men were the only ones with money, property, etc. I'm sure someone out there must know exactly where it came from! In terms of being a money spinner, surely all insurances are a good way of spending money?! You're always paying someone in case something happens, hoping it won't – at least in the case of life insurance, death (and taxes) are certain...
