My daughter is spending a study year abroad at the University of Birmingham in England next year, and I'd like to know what the best options are for health insurance for foreigners (she's a US citizen). Can we trust the NHS or should I pay for private cover?

I don't think you'll have any problems with the NHS. As long as your daughter is in England for more than six months she gets free health cover. There is a lot of unfair judgement of the NHS, but it provides quality health care free of charge, even offering free health insurance for foreigners, so there's no need to complain or fear it. You might not get the five star care you'd expect from a private hospital in the US, but at least you know she'll be taken care of even if she comes into A&E drunk, without her insurance card! As she's young, chances are low that she'll need much medical attention anyway, unless she has existing conditions...

Also very interesting:

  • Is there such a thing as a NHS insurance card?

Well I have always had a good experience with the NHS but if you want to be on the safe side then there is always BUPA, I think they are the largest private health insurer in the UK. However I would say that the majority of people in the UK use private insurers as a top-up scheme rather than an alternative to the NHS. It is just good to have in case you end up needing a surgery where the waiting lists for NHS are too long etc. But if your daughter is here for one year then she should be fine. Universities usually have their own doctors practice somewhere on campus that she will be able to register at and they are usually very efficient.

Thanks for all your responses guys. Its hard to see your "little" girl going off to another country..... especially so far away.

So BUPA is one of the best private health insurers.... that correct? What kind of prices are we talking about? And are they fine with insuring foreigners?
