I'm planning to go to study in the USA and I'm a bit worried about the health insurance... SDSU say that I have to take out a certain policy... Why?

It's extremely important that you have adequate health insurance when you're in the USA because they won't treat you if you don't have insurance! You could literally drag yourself into an Emergency Room with a broken leg, leaving a bloody trail behind you, and their first question would be: do you have insurance? I'm sure SDSU are just taking precautions by asking everyone to take out a policy that they have chosen. The one they chose is presumably suitable for foreign students and offers you suitable coverage. In fact, it sounds like they've done you a favour by saving you the research!

Try and do your research before you go as you might be able to find a better one over here that is willing to cover you while you are abroad and it might be easier to arrange. Have you tried ISO? There website is very good as it takes your details and what uni you will be attending in America and lets you compare different international student policies.
