My friend tells me there are lots of ways to reduce expensive health insurance: gym membership, losing weight, lifestyle choices etc. Can you really achieve a significant reduction in your policy by shaping up?

Your health insurance provider will take all your current health indicators and potential risks into account when they calculate the cost of your policy. For this reason, it's a good idea to try and be in the best shape you can be when they assess you! If you already have health insurance but it's expensive because you're overweight, a smoker, etc. then you can also make lifestyle changes and potentially reduce your premiums. Most insurers will want to monitor the change to ensure it's long term: for example, if you stop smoking you may have to have been a 'non-smoker' for five years before you are counted as a non-smoker for your premiums. Contact your insurance provider and ask them how they calculate your premiums and what you can do to reduce them: doing this before you start will give you a clear indication of the practical measures that will have the most financial influence!

How can they know this though? Many health insurance companies operate online and even if your weight seems normal and you don’t smoke it doesn’t necessarily mean you are healthy? And what if someone if a little heavy but works out 5 times a week and has a great healthy lifestyle, how would they know this? Its not like they do any tests....
