I am trying to get some information about health insurance in Japan. I wanted to go there to teach English but not sure what kind of insurance I’d need.

The two main categories of health insurance are referred to as Kenkō-Hoken (Employee's health insurance) and Kokumin-Kenkō-Hoken (national health insurance). National health insurance is generally reserved for self-employed people and students so it would depend on whether you were planning to teach English on a freelance basis or within a school as an employee.

Japanese health care is very expensive so make sure that you are 100% covered before you go. If you have accepted a position in a school make sure that social corporate insurance is included. It is important that you understand the nature and scope of the coverage, so be sure to ask your employer about the details.

Be careful with the NHI it only covers you for 70% of costs so if something major happens the rest is up to you

How would I apply to the national health insurance? Is it possible as a foreigner?
