I wanted to pay for my holiday with a debit card, and the travel agency said they only accept credit cards because they need to block money... What is this? Why should there be a difference using debit / credit cards to make a purchase?

Sometimes a company can block a certain sum of money on your credit card. This means that if necessary, they could access this sum of money for a payment. This tends to happen when the exact payment amount is unknown or may not be necessary, for example, if a car hire agency want to block a deposit while you rent the vehicle but unblock it when you return the car undamaged. I'm not sure why the travel agency want to block money on your card... did you ask? Some companies don't accept certain types of payment: are you sure this wasn't a factor?
