I'm coming to the UK to live and study and need to set up a bank account. I also need to apply for a debit card. Can I get this sorted before moving? Or only when I'm already a resident? |

There's nothing to stop you contacting a UK bank and asking their advice / their opinion. I think you'll probably find it easier to set the account up when you arrive: it shouldn't take a long time if you only need basic services. You may be able to set the account up 'in advance', but I imagine it involves significantly more paperwork, and you may end up paying unnecessary charges. Perhaps someone else has done this before...? You can spend time researching the best bank before you move; that way you know where you need to go when you arrive. You should also be able to check their web site to see which documents you'll need to open the account. |

Have you contacted the international office of the uni you will be studying at? When I went to study in the UK, the International office sent me a guide with different information on what I would need as an international student to open a bank account. I doubt you would be able to open the account before you arrive as there is no guarantee for the bank that way that you would actually come. The only way around this would be to apply online, but even then you have to give a UK address alongside other infos so im afraid you’re probably going to have to wait. |

Are you from the EU or elsewhere? I only ask as this will affect the amount of time it will take for you to open an account upon arrival. |
