I had a problem with my debit card last week and I called up the Halifax telephone banking number to find out what exactly had happened. When I finally got through the lady on the phone told me that she was not able to tell me what was wrong as I was not set up for telephone banking. Is this normal? I used to be with Barclays and if it was such a normal question as to whether the card was working or not there would be no problem in them answering but I am not sure if this varies depending on bank policies or if the woman was wrong.

I would say that she was wrong. I am with Halifax also and I call them all the time just to check my balance etc and they have no problem telling me such things, it is just when you actually want to alter something that they can’t help you. For example I couldn’t change my address by phone.
