I've seen that some American banks offer fun character cards, for kids or maybe the young at heart, like a Hello Kitty debit card... Does anyone know whether these are also available in the UK?

Hilarious! Naturally it is, as you said, available in the states... and no doubt in Japan too I don't think they are available here as it began as a partnership with Bank of America. In Australia you can actually design your credit card yourself! Most credit card companies now offer a choice of card designs, although you may not find as much choice as you'd like. You can also get cards that are themed to match your favourite football team or charity, like WWF. If you're looking for a 'cute' card there are WWF ones with polar bears
