Hi there, maybe someone can help me out – I'm in Spain for the next few months and I don't want to set up a bank account. I have a Halifax debit card. Halifax luckily don't look to charge too much for foreign use... Can anyone confirm this in practice, not theory? Anyone have a Halifax card they've used abroad?

I have a Halifax current account with debit card and a Halifax credit card, and I've never had any problems using them abroad. Of course the amount they charge you is a bit OTT if you ask me, but all banks charge too much. It's a good idea to let your bank know you're going to Spain, in case they interpret the Spanish transactions on your account as being fraudulent! There are two charges every time you use your debit abroad: one percentage charge on the currency conversion and one flat fee of £1.50. It's a good idea to take more out less frequently to avoid unnecessary charges...

If you are a wise spender and you can manage your expenses/debts then I would suggest using a credit card. I am not sure if it is the same for all cards but with my Barclaycard Gold the rate they charged me when I would use my card in France was a lot less that for my Barclays debit card. The exchange rate they use often differs two making it cheaper to use the credit card as long as you don’t pay interest on it and pay it back straight away....
