Hi there, am off around the world & will be teaching at a school in Penang for at least 6 months. My contact told me to organise a local bank account & I'd also like online banking. Maybank was recommended to me by the school: does anyone have any experience of them? Or of banking in Malaysia in general?

Hey, I think you should be able to bank with Maybank. They offer a personal current account for anyone over eighteen, although you may have to prove you're a current resident. Other accounts are only available for nationals or permanent residents of Malaysia. To open the account you'll need proof of your address, ID and your contract from the school. Have you asked whether the school could open the account for you? I taught in Germany with an ESL school and they set up the account when I sent them copies of the necessary documents... You might need to sign a contract and send it off in the post, but having the bank account in place when you arrive is a big advantage!
