I'm spending a year in Hamburg, Germany, and I'd like to simplify life as much as possible by getting my accommodation and finances in place before the move. Has anyone studied abroad before and got tips as to whether credit cards or debit cards are more useful / necessary abroad?

Ooh Germany is great! Are you planning on getting these cards for your German accounts or your UK accounts? I would definitely recommend opening an account in Germany: it's a real help to have money 'on location', especially if you're there for a whole year. Get an account with the Postbank or the Dresdner/Commerzbank – they all belong to one 'cash group' so you can get money from these banks' ATMs free of charge. I would also recommend getting, or keeping if you have one, a credit card from your UK account. It's good for emergencies, and you never know what you'll get yourself into!

Plus as Germany doesn’t have a credit system it is very useful! In Germany they have a type of credit that gets automatically taken out of your wages the following month so you are never in debt. Great thing for them, bad thing for us when we get used to having whatever we want..... so bad I know, but we always buy things on impulse now, never thinking about what we can actually afford. The Germans have got it right!!!
