I shop a lot online and on the high street. After that wedding gifts site went bust there has been a lot more talk of 'securing' your purchases by using credit. What's the best for making a purchase: debit card or credit card?

The reason why credit cards are seen to be 'secure' or 'safe' by some is that the credit card companies themselves tend to offer purchase insurance. This means that if you buy something with a credit card (like a wedding gift!) and the company you buy it from goes bust and basically cannot fulfil the original contract (providing you with the gift) then you get your money back from the credit card provider. Of course you will need to prove certain aspects and keep your fingers crossed, but a credit card provider can be prevailed upon. If you buy something with your debit card and the money is 'gone' but there's a problem, you can't ask your bank or building society to reimburse you.
