I'm going to be touring the land down under for a year or maybe eighteen months with a couple of friends. We've already worked out that buying a van will work out cheaper... can we get a 'travellers' car insurance? SGIC or something like that? How should we insure ourselves?

I think you need to purchase temporary insurance to cover the van. This works the same way as regular car insurance but is only valid for a short period of time, such as one year. I think you can even get it in different versions, like third party fire and theft only or comprehensive. The only problem is that I can't find any Australian companies that offer this! However, you may be able to organise it from the UK. HIC Insurance offers temporary or 'short term' insurance!
