I'm interested in setting up my own business, and I'd like to know what kind of support is available, specifically for veterans? I've read that there are small business loans for veterans available from the SBA – are these appropriate for new ventures?

In a word, yes. The SBA is very keen to assist in business development as well as offer support to existing companies. Their website has a feature called the Small Business Planner, and this has a load of different articles designed to help you plan your whole venture: from creating a business plan to selling the business! There are even tips on choosing employees and paying taxes. They also have a program called the Office of Veterans Business Development, so I think they'd be a great place to start.
