I'm going travelling and would ideally like to spend some time in India, maybe a few years, helping a friend who is trying to set up a language school. Does anyone know how easy it is to get business loans in India? Or even if it's possible for foreign nationals?

The HSBC is indeed the world's local bank. It offers banking solutions in India too! Do you have an account there? Or does your friend? You may be able to organise financing through them / bank accounts with lower charges... If your friend has a building for the school, she may also be able to secure a loan against the property and organise a loan in that way too. Have you thought about charity or government funding? If there's a clear business plan and the figures make sense, you may be able to raise some money for the school – perhaps even organise grants that don't have to be repaid!
