Visiting a Doctor in Spain

Spain's national health system offers healthcare to all Spanish residents free of charge. As a Spanish national, you should automatically be registered with the social services and entitled to state healthcare; foreign nationals will need to register as a Spanish resident if they wish to access the healthcare available.

If you require medical attention in an emergency, perhaps following a serious accident, you will be entitled to care free of charge from the Spanish emergency services.

Whilst the majority of medical care is free in Spain, patients are expected to contribute towards the cost of medicines if they are able to do so. If you choose to take out private medical insurance, you may need to pay for certain services and medicines in addition to paying your insurance premium.
