Severe Disablement Allowance

Severe Disablement Allowance is a benefit available to people who were not eligible for Incapacity Benefit but were unable to work for more than twenty-eight weeks due to severe illness or disability. Severe Disablement Allowance claims were possible until 5th April 2001. If you made a claim on or before this date and continue to be eligible for the Allowance, you should continue to receive it. However, since the 6th April 2001 it has not been possible to make a new claim for Severe Disablement Allowance.

Severe Disablement Allowance is currently £49.15 a week. As with Incapacity Benefit there is an extra Age Addition benefit to assist those who became unable to work at a young age. If you were under forty years of age when you became incapable of work you should receive an Age Addition of £17.10 a week. If you were between forty and forty-nine years of age when you became unable to work your addition will be £11.00 a week. Finally, if you were between fifty and fifty-nine years of age, your addition will be £5.50 a week.

If you are currently claiming Severe Disablement Allowance and have any questions, or if you think you are entitled to the Allowance because your current request relates to an earlier claim, you should contact your local Jobcentre Plus office for guidance. You can also telephone Jobcentre Plus direct on 0800 055 6688.
