Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit

If you became ill or disabled as a result of an accident or disease which occurred at, or which you contracted resulting from, your job you may be entitled to receive Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit. This is a weekly benefit intended to go some way towards supporting people with job related health problems. You must have been employed and earning money in Great Britain when you contracted the disease or had the accident. Your disease or accident should have been contracted or have occurred on or after 5th July 1948 to qualify.

You may in some cases be eligible for compensation if your disease or accident preceeded this date, and if this is the case you are advised to contact Jobcentre Plus on 0800 055 6688 as soon as possible. You do not need to have been earning enough to pay National Insurance contributions. There are no age restrictions to receiving Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit, and you can be unemployed or working when you claim.

The amount of money that you are entitled to receive will depend on your age and how disabled you are as a result of your condition. You may be required to attend a medical examination where a doctor can assess the severity of your condition. If you are under eighteen years of age and have no dependents, you may receive a benefit of between £16.14 and £80.70 a week. If you are over eighteen years of age, or under eighteen but have dependents, you may receive a benefit of between £26.34 and £131.70 a week.

If you think that you have a disease which has been caused by your job, contact Jobcentre Plus on 0800 055 6688 as soon as possible. If you have had a work-related accident which has resulted in a disability, contact Jobcentre Plus on 0800 055 6688 two months after the accident occurred. At this time you are entitled to begin receiving the benefit. If your circumstances change at any time, for example, your health deteriorates, you should contact the benefits service as soon as possible. This enables the benefits service to ensure that you are always receiving the support to which you are entitled.
