Choosing a Current Account

Current accounts are widely available and are offered by both banks and building societies. Although current accounts are customarily the same in terms of the basic banking services they offer to customers, such as a debit card or a chequebook, the level of service and terms and conditions of each current account may vary widely. Before making a final decision regarding which financial institution you would like to be your current account provider, you should to research the accounts on offer at a range of banks and building societies. Additionally, there are now several online banks offering current accounts which you can research using the internet. It is important that you consider a range of factors when choosing your current account:

  • what are the typical charges you will face for making payments?
  • will you be given a debit card or chequebook?
  • does your bank offer online or telephone banking?
  • how much interest will you receive on your account balance?

When you have decided which financial institute to use you may wish to arrange a meeting with one of their financial advisors who can inform you of the specific advantages and disadvantages of the accounts on offer and advise you as to which current account would be the most able to meet your financial needs. You should bear in mind however that this advice will not be objective.
